The Story Behind The Brand

This brand didn't start with a product.
It started with a life.

A kid with a dream. A man who refused to stop.

Everything you see here is what betting on yourself actually looks like.

Chapter 01 · Age 3

The First Audition.

There's a chapter in the book that talks about being the chosen one. But here's the catch, we all are. The question was never who was chosen. It was always who believed it first.

At three years old, Marlon E. Curtis II walked into an audition room before he had the language for ambition, before he understood cameras or casting calls or what any of it meant. He just walked in and showed up fully.

That's what belief looks like before the world teaches you to doubt it. Pure. Unfiltered. Unstoppable.

He didn't know he was betting on himself. He just was. That was the first bet. And it never really stopped.

Chapter 02 · High School

The Camera Found Him Again.

Years passed. Life moved. And then high school happened and the camera came back.

But this time it didn't come back alone. It came back through a man named Harcourt. A mentor. A visionary. Someone who looked at a young Marlon and saw something he hadn't fully seen in himself yet. Harcourt put the camera back in his hands and told him something that would echo for decades.

"You're going to take this further than anybody can ever see it."

That's the kind of words that don't leave you. They become you. From that moment, the dream stopped being a dream. It became a direction. The work began. The foundation was being laid, one frame at a time.

This is why mentorship matters. Not just for the skill it transfers, but for the belief it plants in someone before they're ready to grow it themselves.

Harcourt saw it first. Marlon made sure he was right.

Chapter 03 · The Dream

A Kid Who Dreamed of BET.

BET. Black Entertainment Television. But look closer at that word - BET. That's all Marlon has ever done.

He carried the dream of working there from childhood. Through high school. Through college. Until his third year, when a financial wall appeared and forced him to walk away from school.

Same semester he dropped out. Same semester BET called.

No degree. No blueprint. Just a childhood dream, a closed door, and an open one appearing at the exact same moment. The universe doesn't make mistakes.

He walked in. He showed up. He helped shape narratives seen by millions. The dropout became the dream.

Chapter 04 · Simultaneously

Building While Building.

Most people wait for one thing to be finished before they start the next. Marlon never learned how to wait.

The same season he stepped into BET, the same season the dream became real, he was already building something of his own. No pause. No permission. No "let me get settled first."

He launched his production company and went to work. Four short films. Two awards. A growing team. A client so locked in that he was absorbing everything, every technique, every framework, every lesson ... just so he could go home and teach his own people.

That's the mark of work that transfers. Work that doesn't just perform, it teaches.

This is what aggressive belief looks like in practice. Not reckless. Not rushed. Just relentless. Two worlds running simultaneously, one building his résumé, one building his legacy.

BET by day. His own empire by every other hour. The margins became the foundation.

Chapter 05 · Newark

Newark In His DNA.

Most people don't know that Newark, New Jersey is the birthplace of film.

The city that raised him didn't just shape his character, it handed him a purpose. As Head of Production for the Newark International Film Festival, he didn't just show up to work an event. He showed up to give back to the ground that grew him.

He built with crew. He opened doors. He sat with high school students, kids who reminded him of himself, and poured into them the same way Harcourt once poured into him.

That's the cycle of belief in motion. Someone sees something in you. You go build. Then you come back and make sure the next generation doesn't have to figure it out alone.

Newark gave Marlon a stage. Marlon used it to build platforms for others.

The city didn't just live in his story. It lived in his decisions. That's what it means to have it in your DNA.

Chapter 06 · The First Brand

On The Set Apparel - Where It All Started.

In 2015, Marlon officially joined the entertainment industry. Within four years he had seen enough to know exactly what was missing.

The creators, the directors, the editors, the cinematographers, the grip, the gaffer ... the ones who built the magic from the ground up, never had a brand that was truly theirs.

So in 2019, he built one.

On The Set Apparel. An all-black apparel brand designed specifically for the culture of production. For the people who live behind the scenes and rarely get to step in front of anything with their name on it.

All black. Always. Because on a film set, black isn't just a color. It's a uniform. It's a standard. It's a statement that says "I'm here to work, and I take this seriously."

On The Set Apparel gave that world something to wear with pride. It was his first bet in fashion. It would not be his last.

Chapter 07 · The Book

31 Reasons Why You Should Bet On Yourself.

The most important investment you will ever make is in yourself. By 31, Marlon had lived enough to know that.

Enough seasons in the industry. Enough doors opened and closed. Enough bets placed, lost, and won. Enough wisdom not to keep it to himself any longer.

So he wrote it down.

31 Reasons Why You Should Bet On Yourself wasn't written from a place of arrival. It was written from a place of conviction. A blueprint forged through real experience — not theory, not borrowed inspiration, but a life actually lived on the terms of belief.

31 chapters. 31 reasons. One truth running through all of them. You are the best investment you will ever make.

The book became a community. The community demanded something they could carry beyond the pages — something they could wear into every room, every audition, every early morning, every moment the world went quiet and the only voice left was their own.

That demand became this brand.

Read the book that started it all

Chapter 08 · On The Set Podcast

The Voice of an Entire Industry.

The mic was always his.

Throughout every chapter of this journey — the sets, the festivals, the films, the classrooms, the edit bays — Marlon kept meeting people. Dope creators. Unsung visionaries. The kind of talent that shapes culture from behind the scenes and never gets a moment in the spotlight.

And he kept asking himself the same question. Why hasn't the world heard their story?

Two years after On The Set Apparel, he stopped asking and started recording.

On The Set Podcast was born — a show dedicated to shedding the spotlight on the heroes and unsung heroes of entertainment as a whole. Not just film. Not just TV. The entire world of entertainment and every soul that keeps it alive.

Real stories. Real journeys. Real inspiration for the next creator trying to navigate an industry that doesn't always hand you a map. As Creator and Showrunner, Marlon didn't just build a platform. He built a seat at the table for the people who were always worthy of one.

The mic was always his. He just made sure it was theirs too.

Chapter 09 · Present Day

Author. Father. Husband. Son. Friend. Trailblazer.

Bet On Self is not a brand you buy into. It's a decision you wear.

Every chapter you just read — the audition room at three years old, the mentor who saw it first, the dream job that arrived the same semester the door closed, the films, the festival, the brand, the book, the mic — all of it led here.

Not to a hoodie. To a reminder.

A reminder that you were always capable. That the bet was always worth placing. That every single thing you've been through — the setbacks, the pivots, the moments nobody clapped — was preparation, not punishment.

Marlon built this for the ones still in the middle of their story. The ones who wake up early when no one's watching. The ones who build in the margins. The ones who keep going when the world goes quiet and the only voice left is their own.

This is for you. Because if there's one thing thirty-plus years of betting on yourself teaches you — it's this.

The bet never loses when you're the one you're betting on. Continue to bet on you.

If nobody else — Bet On Self. 🖤

Bet On Self is a materialization of thought.

Something we can wear every single day as a badge of honor.

No applause. No permission. No waiting.

If nobody else —
Bet On Self.
